Workshops Bayside Yoga bases it's classes on the five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air &Ether. Earth classes are inspired by qualities of the soil and minerals. They teach how to get grounded and how to build strength and balance in the bones and muscles. Each class is different and focuses on developping a strong foundation in the basics of alignment and strength. An Earth class could include elements from styles such as Iyengar,Integral, Sivananda, Anusara, and Yin Yoga. Earth are great for those new to yoga, but will challenge and stimulate all levels of student. Restorative classes are the icing on the cake of all yoga classes. They invite you to completely let go of all effort and stress by moving into long, luxurious floor poses, with the help of blankets and pillows. This style is perfect for anyone who experiences stress, anxiety, fatigue, injuries, or just understands the value of rest for good health. Water classes add the challenge of flowing transitions to the classical postures. Water can be still, or it can move quickly. It can be quiet and gentle, or it can rush hard against a barrier. In a water class you will encourage the body to open more fully with your breath and build confidence in your practice. These classes are for people who have mastered the basic postures: Warrior, Triangle, Downward Dog, Cobra, Tree, Seated Twist, Forward Fold, Bridge and Half lotus. Fire is necessary to transform matter into energy. In our bodies it exists as acid and bile in our blood and guts. In order to digest food, kill off harmful invaders, and detoxify, we need to increase our inner fire. Too much though, and we will burn out. At Bayside we add a little bit of heat to some of our Earth and Water classes to help turn up your inner fire. Air classes work with the natural winds of breath and thought, as well as the subtle energy body. Combining Kundalini style exercises with the subtle practices of pranayama, mudras, bandhas can elevate your mind to new levels of clarity and peace. You need no previous experience to attend these classes, only the desire to go deeper within yourself. Meditation class brings us together as a group to study the ancient yogic texts and put them into practice. The foundational scriptures of yoga do not emphasize the body, but rather, they call on the yogi to still the mind through various methods of sense withdrawal and concentration. Chanting and candle gazing, breath awareness and visualization, are some of the methods we will explore each week. Yoga Dance is a unique class in that it is grounded in modern and contemporary dance, rather than yoga. This class lets you leave the confines of your mat and express yourself in creative movement. Previous dance experience is not necessary.
